George Clooney - Want to Help Darfur? Time to Step Up to the Plate!

Lopez Lomong is going to the Olympics.  His long journey began at age 6 when he was kidnapped and separated from his parents and 5 siblings, so he could be trained as a child soldier.  He escaped and ran straight into a refugee camp where he spent the next 10 years.  Eventually he wound up in the US and has secured a spot on the US Olympic Team. 

Having spent his entire "training" years sustaining on 1 meal a day and a virtual prisoner I can only imagine what he thinks about our American athletes who are so vocal about the "sacrifices" they had to make to become Olympians.  I think it might be interesting to put Lopez and Dominique Moceanu in a room together so they can compare the hardships of training.

Here's a suggestion for all the Hollywood stars who have taken up the plight of Darfur (Lopez Lomong is a representative of Team Darfur).  Mr. Lomong has a goal for his Olympic experience - that is to win a medal so he can afford to get his family out of the nightmare world they live in.....wouldn't it be so great if our wealthy stars would contribute to his mission regardless of the outcome of his race?!

Think your child has what it takes to become a professional athlete?  think again - the odds are against you. 

Statistics show a very small amount of High School Athletes getting college scholarships and/or a smaller amount becoming professional athletes after college. 

Take the glory in the homecoming game and trophies lining the bedroom walls of your star and enjoy the moment!  Fame and glory may never arrive!

ASU Athletics Resusitate Sports Programs?

In what could only be described as a surreal moment this morning I read two pieces of information that seemed like an odd coincidence.

The news that ASU is cutting 3 sports from their roster due to cutbacks was disappointing.  Wrestling, Tennis and Swimming will no longer be offered and by cutting these 3 sports they are saving 1.1 million dollars. 

After reading this news and feeling a bit deflated (hate to read that schools are cutting out athletics), I opened my mail and began reading the newsletter from my children's old school (nursery-9th grade) which proudly lists the donations contributed to the "annual operating fund"....remember, nursery-9th graders.....8 families fell under the "1 million or more" heading, 20 under the "500,000-1 mill" and so on.....clearly this tiny private school has learned how to get it's alumni and current family members to participate in raising funds - perhaps our college administrators should go back to fund-raising school!

Tim Montgomery and Marion Jones, Jail and Heroin - Great Couple!

Marion Jones and boyfriend Tim Montgomery have gone down in a flame of fury!  She is sitting in a jail cell and now he is headed for one.

Tim Montgomery, a former track star, has been indicted on heroin distribution charges, the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported Thursday.

What a waste of 2 great athletic careers!
